The zodiac is a band in the sky where the movements of the Sun, Moon, and planets are astrologically divided into 12 different sections that are named for the 
constellations they used to coincide with. The positions of the sun and planets in relation to the zodiac are said to influence what happens to us here on Earth. Astrologers use these positions to explain and predict the events that occur on our home planet.
The word zodiac comes from the Latin word zodiacus, and translates from the Greek word zodiakos meaning “circle of animals.” However, there are also signs in the zodiac that are not animals.
The date of your birth decides which of the 12 zodiacal signs you belong to. The 12 signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each sign has its own set of personality traits and 
characteristics that a person born under that sign is said to possess. The 12 signs are each associated with one of four elements (fire, water, earth, and air) and one of three qualities (cardinal, fixed, and mutable). Each element and quality also has a set of characteristics that a person is said to possess.
Do the stars and the planets really have an effect on our lives here on Earth? Although we may never know for certain the answer to that question, or have an answer that everyone will agree on, there are numerous people who have strong feelings on the subject. Some people find entertainment in zodiac signs and astrology, some think it is nonsense, and some take it very seriously.
There are also other zodiacs that are found and practiced in other areas of the world. One of these is the Chinese zodiac. The Chinese zodiac is more complex and follows a 12 year cycle, focusing on the year that a person was born, rather than just the date. It also does not correspond to any constellations.
There are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, one for each year of the cycle. These animals are the rat, buffalo (ox), tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig (boar). There are a few different legends explaining the origin of the animals in the Chinese zodiac. A well-known 
legend says that the animals were invited to participate in a race by Buddha. The order that they appear in the Chinese zodiac is said to be the order of their position in the race.
